Did you know that the seemingly innocent photo of your dog in your backyard likely contains the exact GPS coordinates of your home?
What is EXIF Data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata attached to digital photos. It records vital information for photographers, such as:
- Camera make and model
- Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO
- Date and time the photo was taken
- GPS Latitude and Longitude
The Privacy Threat
When you upload photos to social media platforms, many of them automatically strip EXIF data. However, if you send an image via email, text message, or upload it to a forum or blog, the metadata often remains intact. A malicious actor can easily download the photo, extract the coordinates, and pinpoint exactly where you were at that specific time.
How to Sanitize Your Photos
Using LensText's Privacy Sanitizer:
- Navigate to the Privacy Sanitizer tool.
- Select the "EXIF Metadata Stripper" tab.
- Upload your photo.
- Click "Clean & Download".
The tool reads the binary structure of your JPEG, removes the metadata tags, and reconstructs the image. Because this process doesn't alter the actual pixels, you lose zero image quality. It is a purely mathematical operation performed locally in your browser. You can also prepare multiple photos at once with our [Batch Image Resizer](/image-resizer/).
